The question of when you switch from felt to straw is as personal as picking out the right hat itself.
For a long time, we here at Goorin Bros had two distinct seasons of large new Fedora drops: Fall and Winter(F/W) and Spring and Summer(S/S). F/W always meant wool or fur felts and S/S was all cottons, linens and straw upon more straw. But then about three or four years ago, we received a late shipment of Dean the Butchers, arriving in mid-June, when it was legit H-O-T across almost the entire country. And to our surprise? We sold out of every last one of them by the end of July. 100% wool hats, gone. At a time of year when anyone of us would have been sweating our little heads off in these.
It taught us a few valuable lessons. One: Always be open to learning. It’s how we’ve made it from 1895 to the doorstep of 2025 as a successful and relevant hat company.
Two: our clients want felts year round. They want fresh felts, and they’ll buy now and wear later, or buy them now and wear now.
We are always going to transition to Spring/Summer by having hefty amounts of straw styles, but we’ve learned our lesson and you will always see some fresh, unique felt styles dropping from us no matter the time of year.
That said, when to wear felt or not to wear felt is a question best answered given your own personal circumstances. For me, any temps over 70 degrees (especially with humidity in the mix) mean I go to my linens or straws. But if I’m mostly indoors with the A/C on, it can be felt all day. I know some clients, they only wear straw at the beach and feel a hat worn in the city must be felt. Some others, they only wear felt if it's raining or snowing. It really is what your body and climate dictate. No matter what, we’regonna bring the fresh felts.
