Summer Nights: Escape the Escape

Escape from Everything. Escape the Escape.

The latest capsule from Goorin Bros. Avoid the average.

Summer Nights: Escape the Escape
"It’s time to get away. Take a deep breath… Escape the escape. There’s a place where you can ride with seahorses, dance with flamingos, and cuddle like love birds. A place so far out that the only voices for miles are your squad, your closest beach bums, and the stars of your real team. Truly get away."

As humans we need routine to be well, human. But we also need to cancel our day-to-day run-of-the-mill existence and escape every once in awhile. I'm sure each of you can think back to a particular day trip or vacation where you had it all planned out: whether it be relaxation, trying something extraordinary, or enjoying a new destination. I know you also feel that that "escape" you were hoping for, sometimes doesn't quite feel like the escape you wanted or needed.

This collection is for you. We're avoiding the average, we're leaving behind the mundane, and we're inserting ourselves into a different reality. The opening statement was from our Farm brand designer, !Michael K, on what this collection speaks to. Upon looking at these products, the first thing I was drawn to was all the colors. Bright, yet muted, neon, yet drawn from the shadows of the night. It got me thinking about things that inspire this "escape from escape" mentality. Here's what I escaped to with this collection:

1. Takashi MurakamiOften referred to as “the Warhol of Japan,” Takashi Murakami is known for blurring the line between art and consumerism. “We want to see the newest things,” Murakami says of his artistic philosophy. That is because we want to see the future, even if only momentarily. It is the moment in which, even if we don’t completely understand what we have glimpsed, we are nonetheless touched by it. This is what we have come to call art.” Murakami has partnered with fashion brands as well as musical artists in addition to his global art movement 'superflat.' (source)

I personally love Murakami's work because it is not the typical art style I gravitate towards. (The earliest art movement I remember identifying with at a young age was was French Impressionism.) Because of this, when I was able to see one of his exhibitions at the MCA Chicago years back, I was completely immersed in this world he created. The bright colors, the characters, and boldness truly suck you in and let you see the world from his point of view. In thinking of other artists who's work I feel myself becoming completely transported into: Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516), and René Magritte (1898-1967) come to mind (pictured below)2. Chief Keef x True Religion - "The collaboration builds on the Chicago rapper’s decade-long influence on music and his adoration for the brand. Keef’s 2012 track “True Religion Fein” is what inspired the special range, marking it with bold imagery. "(source) "This collection features bold and playful graphics such as vibrant hearts, skulls, and bones, across t-shirts, joggers, jeans, jackets, and beanies" (source)

I came across this collaboration scrolling through instagram and was immediately intrigued. The vibrancy of colors and patterns felt so multi-demential to me, bold yet playful.3. Meow Wolf - Meow Wolf is an arts and entertainment company based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They create immersive and interactive experiences that transport audiences of all ages into fantastic realms of story and exploration. (source)

I am planning a trip out to New Mexico this summer and visiting the Santa Fe installation of Meow Wolf is definitely on my list. After visiting places like Salvation Mountain, Noah Purifoy's Outdoor Desert Museum, and The Heidelberg Project, I've been more interested in seeing art outside of the typical gallery setting. Immersive art. Interactive. Response generating.
