how to bring your wardrobe (hats included!) season to season
When it comes to transitional outfitting for the in between months of September and October, two important details I try to consider in the varying temps of this time of the year are: choice of material in what I am wearing and go-to pieces that can be layered or removed.
As far as hats are concerned, I typically find our pieces made from merino wool to be the best choices for this time of the year. When days and nights are constantly oscillating between summer and winter, merino wool is such a solid choice because it is a temperature regulating material. So if it is cold outside this particular wool’s fibers help hold in the heat, offering you insulation. Conversely if it is still hot outside where you are, and you find yourself a little…damp, merino wool is actually still the perfect fit for you. When you sweat in merino, the fibers of this wool open up and wick sweat away from your skin into the air, helping you stay dry and cool despite the heat. Merino is literally designed to be worn in all seasons. Plus it is incredibly lightweight and soft, so its truly the best of both worlds in that it’s light like a straw but soft like a wool felt. My personal favorites for a fall balance are the River Gray, the Night Hawk, and of course the Colonel Pierce. Now I will say if you aren’t totally ready to say goodbye to summer head gear, I believe you can still have an extended summer in your wardrobe with a palm straw like the recently restocked Tomas Santiago or the Sundowner. These particular straws hit totally different when going from being paired with bikinis and sundresses to outfitting them with similarly durable materials like denim or pairing them with your favorite cozy sweater, and boots. The thickness of these hats allows them to translate into fall so well I think, because of their visual heft gives a look of functionality to protect and keep you warm as opposed to toquilla Panama straws which by visual alone translates summer, heat, and the need for lightweight head wear for coolness sake. Of course, the shelf life of even these straws begins to wane in certain areas that do tend to have clearer seasons, but if you live in warmer climates, my theory is you are able to wear straw and wool at all times of the year, the only marker of when its the right time to make the switch is your preference.
In addition to finding the right head gear for this season, I find its just as important to consider pairing the right layers to keep you both cool and warm-weather depending. Its like you are constantly on stand-by for winter every day of fall! Luckily wearing a hat can help with both of these needs, but what I also find to be absolutely necessary in this time of the year is proper removable layers. Living in Los Angeles, both fall and “winter” aren’t necessarily long time visitors but from time to time the temperatures can drop. This requires always leaving the house with options in your outfit that either give another victory lap to the heat of summer or preps you to have something cozy you can keep on standby in case you’re caught in the chill of a desert evening.
I like to be prepared for the opposite ends of the spectrum with key pieces like : A heavier cotton scarf that can double as a shawl ( or even a blanket!); a denim jacket for something durable against windier days and nights; and lastly a blazer that concedes to light layers underneath or an oversized tweed/wool blazer that has space to include bulkier layers like your favorite cozy sweater… weather permitting!Honestly no matter what the weather decides to do in these outlier months, being prepared with covering for your head that is going to look good and transition well with you through the day; as well as a piece or two made for tucking away or covering you up lets you walk out of your door in this season prepared for whatever this mother nature has in store!
