Did you know that Panama hats are handwoven in Ecuador?
'Paja Toquilla' is the plant from which Panama style hats are woven. The straw is gathered from the plant and used to hand-weave into the hats you know and love.
The Panama hat got its name from the country of export, not the country of origin: which is Ecuador! Here at Goorin, our toquilla straw hats are handwoven in Ecuador and then blocked here in the USA, creating the perfect pairing for these timeless pieces.
Panama hats were around since before the 19th century, gaining popularity when President Teddy Roosevelt famously wore a Panama hat in 1906 to visit the Panama Canal construction setting.
A genuine Panama hat will : a) be handwoven in Ecuador using toquilla straw b) be UV graded and protected c) have various horizontal/vertical weaves throughout d) have a rose shaped "knot" at the center of the top of the crown
Toquilla straw is a strong yet delicate material. Since it is a natural fiber it will dry out over time. Simple solution: throw some steam on your toquilla straw hats before wearing them for the season (and every so often when they seem thirsty) If you keep good care of your toquilla straw hat, it will last you forever!
